This year’s New Swan Shakespeare Festival features “The Merry Wives of Windsor Cove” and “Romeo & Juliet.” Actor Evan Lugo, an alumnus of UCI’s master of fine arts acting program, takes the outdoor stage to perform distinct roles in both productions.
What can audiences expect?
Two very different experiences. “The Merry Wives of Windsor Cove” is not only hilarious and fast-paced, but also a completely original adaptation of the play. “Romeo & Juliet” brings all the passion, conflict and heartbreak people love about Shakespeare.
How does the intimate setting change things?
The audience is incredibly close to the action, which creates a level of connection you don’t always get in larger theaters. Audience interaction and participation are a huge part of the experience. You can feel the energy of the performance in real time, and you feel that energy coming right back from the audience.
Is there different preparation?
You have to learn to trust simplicity. Because the audience is so close, every moment is visible, so there’s no need to push or force anything. Instead, the focus is on being fully present, listening to your scene partners and paying attention to the smallest details.
What makes this a must-see?
It’s one of the most unique theaters I’ve ever performed in. Add in a beautiful summer evening outdoors and Shakespeare that feels accessible and easy to follow, and it becomes a really special night out.
