Smoke filled the air just as the sun rose along Pacific Coast Highway when an early morning fire burned in the hills above Emerald Bay and Irvine Cove in Laguna Beach. Luckily, firefighters were able to stop the blaze from destroying any homes.
Lunar New Year celebrations happened in Little Siagon, including the traditional firecrackers at Asian Garden Mall and a mass at the Vietnamese Catholic Center with The Most Rev. Thanh Thai Nguyen in Santa Ana.
Tragedy struck the Huntington Beach police department when one of its helicopters crashed in shallow waters in Newport Beach. Nicholas Vella, 44, was killed in the crash. Another officer was pulled from the wreckage and has since been released from a hospital. Vella was an 18-year law enforcement veteran, with 14 years on the force in Huntington Beach.
