Taco Bell is reaching into the back of its virtual pantry and pulling out five discontinued items from yesteryear, such as Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos and Chili Cheese Burritos.
The Irvine-based chain’s Decades Y2K Menu, will go on sale on Tuesday, Sept. 9, although rewards members can already get one item, the Caramel Apple Empanada, through its app.
This promotion is a throwback to a throwback. Taco Bell’s first Decades menu went on sale for a few weeks last fall, bringing back five items from the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s as well as the empanada, which represented the year 2000.
This year’s theme is more tightly focused on the beginning of the millennium. The other two items are the Double Decker Taco and the 7-Layer Burrito. All are priced at less than $3 at participating locations, according to a news release.
The promotion includes a giveaway of Y2K-themed watches in Taco Bell’s Tuesday Drop at 2 p.m., Sept. 9 on the app. A T-shirt giveaway will follow on Sept. 16.
There will only be 500 of each available, so you’ll probably need gaming reaction time and superfast Wi-Fi if you hope to score something.
The app will also have an analog-looking creature called a Crunchkin, which Taco Bell calls its first digital pet. Rewards members will be able to care for it and make it grow by purchasing Decades food and in return earning points and gaining access to mini-games, the news release said.
