Notable this week: Mater Dei lost to St. John Bosco last week, but the Monarchs stay at No. 1 in the rankings because Bosco was ranked No. 6 at the time in CIF Southern Section Division 1 and Mater Dei was ranked No. 9. … Pacifica Christian’s 54-53 home win over Orange Lutheran pushes the Tritons from No. 7 to No. 5. … The San Joaquin League has three teams — Fairmont Prep, Pacifica Christian and Orangewood Academy — in the top eight.

BOYS BASKETBALL TOP 25

1. Mater Dei 14-3: Monarchs beat No. 2 JSerra by 14 points in Trinity League opener last week, suffered rare league home loss to St. John Bosco, and beat Ohio’s St. Vincent-St. Mary.

2. Santa Margarita 18-3: Eagles are 2-0 in league after wins over Orange Lutheran and JSerra as senior forward Rockwell Reynolds had another standout week.

3. JSerra 13-5: Lions lost to No. 1 Mater Dei by 14 points and to No. 2 Santa Margarita by 14 in Trinity League games.

4. Fairmont Prep 12-4: Huskies lost by two points to Rancho Cucamonga, the No. 3 team in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA rankings, so they remain at No. 4 in the county rankings.

5. Pacifica Christian 13-7: Tritons had a fine week, with a San Joaquin League win over Orangewood Academy followed by a nonleague victory over Orange Lutheran.

6. Orange Lutheran 10-6: Lancers lost to two top-5 teams, Pacifica Christian in a nonleague game and to Santa Margarita in a Trinity League game, and they beat Servite in league play.

7. Foothill 17-1: Knights got a huge victory in their Crestview League opener, winning 56-53 at Canyon, and they beat El Modena in nonleague play.

8. Orangewood Academy 15-4: Spartans lost to Pacifica Christian 55-41 in a San Joaquin League game, but move up because Orangewood beat Newport Harbor by 15 points on Dec. 28 and Newport Harbor beat then-No. 9 Los Alamitos last week.

9. Canyon 14-5: Comanches have been hit as hard as anyone by injuries to key players, but lost by only three points to Foothill. Canyon’s Nate Harrison is one of the better coaches at getting the most out of the roster.

10. Los Alamitos 14-5: Griffins lost in overtime to then-No. 24 Newport Harbor, but don’t drop much because of a Dec. 30 win over Tesoro.
