Nurses at City of Hope Orange County received a surprise “thank you” from the local community on International Nurses Day.
About 200 cards were created by students at four schools in the nearby Great Park Neighborhoods and their community associations.
Some of the cards were mounted on giant letters spelling out “HOPE” that were on display at the cancer care center’s Irvine campus Friday.
Many cards gave thanks for the care of a specific family member, others just said thank you for being a nurse.
“It means we’re doing our job of taking care of people and leaving the warm, loving impression that we want to leave,” Registered Nurse Jennifer Christensen said about the show of support. “That we’re here for the patients and their families.”
One in three people will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, according to City of Hope, which is now building an in-patient hospital next to the outpatient center that opened last year.
May is National Nurses Month with May 12th designated as International Nurses Day.
