Chris Fernandez, a product manager at Amazon, moved to The Park at Irvine Spectrum from New Jersey and loves the difference in his commute time, among other benefits. “I used to have a commute of one hour and 15 minutes each way. Here, I can be in the office within five minutes of walking from where I live.”
We talked to Fernandez about his time in Irvine and the things he likes best.
What drew you to the area?
I worked in finance in the Northeast. The tech industry is booming, and I wanted to be a part of that. Amazon had a great opportunity here in Irvine. I’ve always been interested in the SoCal lifestyle. The palm trees and the weather are incredible.
Why did you choose The Park?
The main reason was the size of the pool. The standard of living is great, and having entertainment nearby – Irvine Spectrum Center is just a 10-minute walk away – is valuable to me.
What’s the biggest benefit to a live-work-play area?
Not needing a car to get around. I have more time back. Having great entertainment nearby is valuable. For fine dining or nightlife, I had to take the train to New York, which was about an hour. Here, there’s easy access to Spectrum, and that has been great.
Where do you spend your free time?
I’m an avid athlete. I competed in Ironman California last year and did all of my training here. The pool at The Park is great for training, and there are three gyms, which open at 5 a.m. I love the Jeffrey Open Space Trail for my running. Also the San Diego Creek Trail, which is right behind where I live. I love going there for long runs on the weekends.
Do you have a favorite spot at Spectrum Center?
After a long run, I go to Tender Greens or Chipotle. With my colleagues from work, some of our favorite restaurants are Javier’s and Yard House. When we have teammates from other states or other countries come, we like to walk over to Spectrum. They love looking at the palm trees and are always impressed by the beautiful space.
What’s your biggest impression about Irvine?
Health and fitness is top of mind for me. I’m happy to see so many people here who are active. The other thing I enjoy is the proximity to the beaches. Going for a run at the beach in the morning is something I’ve always envisioned. Having that become a reality has been amazing.
