One person was in critical condition after an apartment fire off Bear Paw in Irvine broke out early Sunday morning, Feb. 22, authorities said.

Irvine police and firefighters were on scene at approximately 1:30 a.m., where the fire poured out of a two-story apartment complex in the 10 block of Bear Paw, near Culver and Irvine Center drives. The fire broke out in one of the first-floor units, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Greg Barta.

Video showed firefighters tackling the blaze. Smoke could also be seen coming from the apartment building.

“Our firefighters did a great job. When they arrived on scene, there was a significant volume of fire, and the fire was imminently threatening multiple adjacent units,” Barta said in a phone interview. “Our firefighters rapidly attacked the fire and knocked it down, and they were able to prevent the fire from spreading to any of those adjacent homes.”

The investigation to determine the cause and origin of the fire is still ongoing, Barta added.

OCFA reported one person was transported to the hospital in critical condition. As of late Sunday morning, there had not been any updates on the condition the person was in, Barta said.

The victim was an elderly woman, City News Service reported.
